Is This the Right Fit for Your Athlete?

Trying something new—especially a technical sport like pole vault—can feel like a big step.

Most parents aren’t sure if their athlete will enjoy it, feel comfortable, or even know where to start.

That’s exactly who this camp is built for.

No experience needed. No pressure to commit.

Whether your athlete is completely new or simply curious, this is a structured, supportive environment where they can learn the fundamentals, build confidence, and experience the sport the right way—without pressure or expectation.

So what does that actually look like?

Athletes are guided step-by-step — from proper warm-up and running mechanics to learning how to carry the pole and safely execute technique with efficiency and confidence.

Led by Coach Tim Sullivan — former Division I pole vaulter and coach at WVU, Oklahoma, and Wake Forest.

Real Athletes. Real Progress.

Athletes trained by Steel City coaches

—building confidence, technique, and measurable improvement over time.

We’ve worked with athletes at all levels—from beginners trying pole vault for the first time to athletes who go on to compete at a high level. Our focus is always the same: build strong fundamentals first and create an environment where athletes can grow with confidence.

Why This Camp Is Different

This camp isn’t about pushing athletes too fast or overwhelming them with advanced techniques.

It’s about introducing pole vault the right way—through clear instruction, consistent feedback, and a structured progression that allows each athlete to build confidence step by step.

Every athlete learns at a different pace. That’s expected.

What matters is creating an environment where they feel comfortable trying something new, developing real skills, and gaining confidence with each session.

We understand that many parents aren’t sure if pole vault is the right fit for their child.

That’s exactly why this camp exists.

It’s a low-pressure, structured first step—giving your athlete the chance to learn the fundamentals, build confidence, and decide if they enjoy the sport before making a bigger commitment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need experience?

No—this camp is specifically designed for beginners. Most athletes attending are trying pole vault for the first time. We start with the basics and progress step-by-step so each athlete can build confidence at their own pace.

Yes—when it’s taught the right way.

Safety is built into every part of this camp. Athletes are introduced to proper technique, controlled movement, and safe progression from the very beginning. We focus on fundamentals like takeoff, landing, and body control before advancing, so athletes develop safely and confidently.

Athletes should come dressed in athletic clothing and bring water.

All pole vault equipment is provided, so there’s no need to purchase or bring anything additional. We handle the setup so your athlete can focus on learning and enjoying the experience.

That’s completely normal—and expected.

Many athletes come in unsure at first. The structure of the camp, combined with a supportive coaching environment, helps athletes get comfortable quickly. There’s no pressure to perform—just an opportunity to learn, try something new, and build confidence over time.
